Vioxx® is a drug manufactured by Merck & Co. Inc. to treat arthritis pain. On September 30, 2004, the company announced that it was withdrawing it from the market, because of the results of a three-year VIOXX trial.
The study had shown increased risk for heart problems and stroke for people who had taken VIOXX for 18 months. The first 18 months did not show such increased risk.
The list of potential VIOXX side effects is long, including other body systems besides the cardiovascular system. The following is just a sample.
- Digestive system – constipation, dry mouth, flatulence, hemorrhoids, vomiting
- Immune system – allergies, hypersensitivty
- Metabolism – weight gain, changes in appetite

- Overall – fever, fluid retention, fungal infections, abdominal tenderness, chest pain, chills, bruising.
